Recent analysis has revealed that many home insurance policies do not include accidental damage cover as standard, something that often comes as a surprise to homeowners.
Out of 78 home insurance policies analysed across 35 different providers, accidental damage was included in just 28% of buildings insurance policies and 27% of contents insurance policies. Despite this, research shows that 31% of people with home insurance believe that they are covered for anything that isn’t their fault. In reality, most would need to add accidental damage as an optional extra.
Given that accidental damage accounted for 19% of claims made in the last two years, adding this cover could be a valuable decision and will give you the peace of mind that you are protected.
This data highlights the importance of understanding exactly what your home insurance does and doesn’t cover. Terms, conditions and exclusions vary between providers and assuming you’re covered can lead to costly surprises later down the line if you ever need to make a claim.
